Textbook Strengths: 1) Contains lesson plans and detailed activities making it helpful in planning 2) The textbook is very bright and it has large print making it appealing and fun to look at 3) Content is geared towards lower functioning students who need grade level content presented in a more simplistic format
Textbook Weakness: 1) Some lessons do not provide enough examples to help develop an understanding of the lesson 2) Lessons have too few activities to refine knowledge 3) Written to assume the student understands relationships
Textbooks that have large print for the students to be able read the passages is a benefit, because most textbooks do not display the same fonts, as a result; some text can be difficult to read. Another issue that you mentioned was a similar problems that I encountered when looking through the textbook that I observed; small amounts of examples and activities that were provided in the textbook. A lot of the sections did not include a lot of examples for the students to review to complete class work and assignments. Students need concrete resources to be able to complete assignment, as a result; the book should have more examples about how to work various problems. It is very important that students learn by doing. By doing this, teachers can use activities during each class meeting but in order to do this both the students and the teacher should have activities available from the textbook ideally or from other resources. I found that the textbook that I observed did not have many activities for the teachers to incorporate into his/her lesson plans.
